Salt Lake City University line approved: Despite having voted last month not to proceed with the East West line to the University Salt Lake City council has now reversed the decision and gave the go-ahead for the University - Downtown line. This comes about after a number of changes to mitigate the effect on businesses along 400 South, reduction in the amount of property to be taken over, agreement to restore some bus routes that would have been eliminated and improved parking options. It is hoped to have the line open in time for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games but progress depends on matching Federal funding.

The decision comes after the first week of operation of the first line of the TRAX system, which began Monday. Despite a number of problems with signalling operation has been seen as a success with trains full even off peak. The frequency, and length, of evening trains has had to be increased to satisfy demand and a 15 minute evening frequency is now being operated. Daily ridership figures a reported to be well above the 14 000 passengers per day that had been projected. Business in the shops is also reported to have increased since the line opened.
