Sydney - work starts on extension: Construction of the extension of the Sydney light rail system has started. The 3km extension to Lilyfield is being built along a disused rail corridor. It will cost some AUD 20 million of which AUD16 million is coming from the State Government. The extension is expected to open in the Autumn 2000.

Further extensions to Leichhardt, and Ashfield are possible as well as into the CBD although the latter may have to wait until the road tunnels proposed for the central area are complete.
