Melbourne Route 70 extension open?: We have been advised that the route 70 extension, which opened on the 5th December, is NOT available to passengers. The last stop is Spencer Street and cars travel "empty" over the new extension to the crossover near the World Trade Centre.

A new safety zone has been opened in Flinders Street east of Spencer Street, outside the delicensed Sir Charles Hotham Hotel and near the recently closed Markilles Hotel. This is the first outbound stop for Route 70. It is within walking distance of the public bar of the Waterside Hotel.

There is no sign at Spencer Street to indicate that it is the terminus of route 70.

The first stage of the Docklands tramway in Melbourne opened on 5 December. Route 70 (Wattle Park) is extended from its previous terminus at Spencer/Flinders St. corner to the World Congress Centre a distance of a couple of hundred metres. Although short it is the start of a major new tram route which is under construction and will be opening in stages over the following months. The line will run through the Docklands area past the Docklands Stadium and will rejoin existing trams lines at La Trobe St.

It is understood that the new Victorian government has announced confirmation that the 3km extension of the Mont Albert line to Box Hill would now proceed, and also that tenders are requested for 90 new low-floor articulated trams.
