URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

Light Rail for Houston (TX): The US Federal Transit Administration has authorized The Houston Metropolitan transit authority (METRO) to proceed with preliminary engineering work on its light rail project, and gives METRO contracting authority to incur project costs for that work. The FTA is also allowing METRO to amend its USD1 billion Regional Bus Plan to include the light rail transit project, which means METRO will not have to compete with other cities for New Starts rail funds.

The 7.5 mile, USD272 million Downtown to Astrodome light rail line, was only approved by METRO in September of this year after a year long study in which 90% of correspondents supported the plan.

After authorization from the Board, preliminary engineering work will start immediately, followed in a year by design and construction, for a start of operation in 2004.

Full details of the plan can be found on the METRO site
