Light rail for Australia's Gold Coast : The Queensland government has announced that it favours light rail rather than bus rapid transit for the future AUD 1.67 billion high-capacity link with construction of the first stage from Griffin University to Broadbeach via Southport and Surfers Paradise in 2010-12.

Public consultation will start this autumn and the business case should be confirmed in mid 2009. The adoption of light rail is intended to boost public transport use from 4% to 10% by 2026, when the population will have reached 800 000. The number of private car trips would be reduced by 10% than without rapid transit.
