New French mayors want more trams : The recent French elections saw new mayors elected in 52 cities and many of these had campaigned for better public transport to be achieved by the introduction of tramways.

The following summarises the position: Ajaccio (tram study); Amiens (tram study including tram-train); Annemasse (tram link to Geneve); Bourges (tram study); Brest (tramway by 2012); La Rochelle (tram and tram-train study); Lens (tram Liévin-Lens-Hénin-Beaumont by 2013); Montbéliard (tram-train study); Poitiers (tram-train study); Tours (tramway by 2013); Valence (tram study). The mayor of Toulon campaigned for the tram scheme there to be abandoned.

Existing tramways where extensions are proposed include Bordeaux, Le Mans, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Paris, Rouen, St-Etienne, Strasbourg and Toulouse.
