Sevilla opening : 28 October sees the opening ceremony for the Metrocentro surface tramway in the Spanish city of Sevilla. This 1.3-km line through the city centre precinct was built in just eight months and is temporarily operated by four CAF-built low-floor LRVs that are destined for the light rail line now under construction (and due to open in September 2008). Five special trams will be delivered before then to run Metrocentro; they will feature batteries designed to permit operation without overhead on a sensitive part of the alignment past the historic cathedral. Metrocentro will be extended to run to the RENFE Santa Justa rail station in due course.
