Melbourne contracts extended : The government of Victoria is to extend its contracts with the private operators of Melbourne's train and tram systems until the end of 2009, while it considers replacements.

The government did not want to renegotiate contracts with train operator Connex, or with Yarra Trams, but would extend them for 12 months and allow the companies to compete in the tender so as to ensure increased competition and ultimately improve services.

Both Connex and Yarra Trams have indicated that they plan to compete for the new tenders.
