New tramways across Iberia
:
Spring 2007 saw a flurry of tramway activity across Iberia, where Spain in particular is embracing light rail as the favoured mode of city transport. The three-line system in the Spanish capital, Madrid, opened in May, as did the nearby mini tramway in suburban Parla. Further south the city of Murcia surprised everyone with a typical Spanish tactic, opening a demonstration tramway with borrowed cars, and Alacant's tram subway under the city centre was inaugurated. In Portugal the first stage of the Sul do Tejo system south of Lisboa started carrying passengers. Not on the mainland, but in the Atlantic Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife now boasts a brand-new tramway.
