More trams for Dublin : Ireland’s Republic Procurement agency (RPA) has chosen Alstom to supply 18 Citadis trams for Dublin’s light rail system, LUAS, in an order worth EUR 51.2 million. 4 of the new trams are for the Red Line, 4 for the Green Line, 8 are required for the extension of the Green Line from Sandyford to Cherrywood and 2 are for the Docklands Extension. The contract also covers fixed price options to add more trams for Line Extensions as and when approved. For example, 5 new trams will be required for the proposed Citywest spur. The 40-metre-long low-floor trams will be built at Alstom’s Barcelona plant. Delivery commences December 2008 and will proceed at a rate of two per month.

The project to extend all 26 Red Line trams from 30m to 40m is progressing and will result in increasing the capacity of individual Red Line trams by 40%. The first of the new 10-metre modules have arrived in Ireland from Barcelona, and are being fitted to the trams at the Red Cow Depot. The first of the modified trams will go into service in May.
