Toronto light rail plan
:
Toronto city officials have announced a 15 year CAD 6-billion dollar plan to build an ambitious light rail transit network that will include seven lines.
Nearly CAD 1 billion in public transit funding for the Greater Toronto Area was announced recently, including the federal share of a CAD 2.1 billion project to extend Toronto's Spadina subway line into York Region, but the plan will depend on further Government money to bring it to fruition.
The seven corridors suggested for the Toronto Transit City Plan - Light Rail are:
- Don Mills - Steeles Ave. to Bloor-Danforth Subway - 17.6-km
- Eglinton Crosstown - Kennedy Station to Pearson Airport - 30.8-km
- Etobicoke-Finch West - Yonge Street to Highway 27 - 17.9-km
- Jane - Jane Station to Steeles West Station - 16.5-km
- Scarborough Malvern - Kennedy Station to Malvern/Morningside - 15-km
- Sheppard East - Don Mills Station to Morningside Avenue - 13.6-km
- Waterfront West - Union Station/Exhibition to Long Branch - 11-km
The plan if implemented should attract almost 70 million new riders, and transform Toronto into a "transit city."
