10 new LRT lines for Japan : Light rail systems are planned be built 10 Japanese cities by 2016, according to the government. The Land Infrastructure and Transport Ministry indicates that it will outsource operation of the lines to private companies.

Cities that are tipped to host the new rail systems include Utsunomiya, Sakai, as well as an extension to the recently opened system in Toyama which has seen a steady increase in passengers, attracting interest from local governments across the country.
