Birmingham City Centre Tram Extension Approved: The Department for Transport has confirmed that an order is to be made under the Transport and Works Act giving powers to extend the Midland Metro system, which already links Birmingham’s Snow Hill station with Wolverhampton, through Birmingham city centre to link Snow Hill with New Street and the Five Ways area of Edgbaston. A separate process will take place to determine funding for the project,

The project still needs to be approved by Birmingham city Council - which favours an underground option, estimated to cost in the region of GBP 1-2 billion, and is awaiting the results of a study into that option.
