Vienna provides relief for Siemens:
After several weeks during which Siemens' tram building activity has
been almost paralysed by the Combino crisis, some welcome relief for the
Transit division came from the Austrian capital Vienna, which is
ordering 150 Ultra Low Floor trams for delivery in 2006-12 at a cost of
EUR 357 million, with an option for a further 150. Electrical equipment
will come from Elin EGB. The ULF design was developed specially for
Vienna tramways by SGP, which subsequently became part of Siemens, and
130 of an original order for 150 are already in service, so the total
fleet will reach 300, and if the option is exercised 450. The new order
will permit the replacement of the remaining first-generation
articulated trams in the Vienna fleet.
