Salt Lake City TRAX extension opens: The Utah Transit Authority is due to open the TRAX extension to the University of Utah's sprawling medical complex today (29 September). The 1.5-mile stretch of track has been finished more than a year early, and at a price tag of USD 89.4 million, will come in on budget. Three new stations have been added for the medical centre spur. The first stop is at the South Campus, located between the Huntsman Center and the LDS Church Institute of Religion; the next is at Fort Douglas, which is next to the Olympic Legacy Bridge on Wasatch Drive, just below the university's new student housing. The extension ends at the University Medical Center stop. The complex includes the Primary Children's Medical Center, the Moran Eye Center and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Unlike the rest of the system this new spur will have little segregation from pedestrians and general traffic.

TRAX officials are projecting an initial weekday ridership of around 3,000 a day on the new spur. Currently, 7,500 commuters a day take TRAX to the university on weekdays and more than 31,000 passengers per weekday use the TRAX system.
