Sacramento CA extension: The first extension to the Sacramento Light Rail line is due to open this Friday (26 September) with free rides being offered from Friday to Sunday and also free rides on the rest of the bus and rail system Saturday and Sunday. The new South Line, which cost USD 222m, runs from Meadowview Road in the South to Rose of Lima in downtown Sacramento joining the existing line at 16th St. It adds a further 6.8 miles and 7 stops to the existing 20 mile system. Existing ridership is some 32,000 average daily with the new line expected to add 8,000 per weekday initially. There will be 3 new Park+Ride sites at Meadowview, Florin and 47th Avenue which will have security staff to encourage usage.

A further extension to the city of Folsom is expected to open in 2005. This will cost USD 230m and add a further 10.9 miles with 10 stops and require 14 extra vehicles. A further 5 miles extension is planned for the South Line while other extensions are under consideration including a link to Sacramento International Airport.
