URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

Tacoma Link light rail opens today: Sound Transit's first light-rail service begins carrying passengers today in downtown Tacoma with the opening ceremonies celebrating the new USD80.4 m light-rail system starting at 10 am at the Tacoma Dome Shelton Plaza.

The new light-rail system connects five stations along a 1.6-mile route between the downtown theatre district and the Tacoma Dome, which is a transit hub for rail and bus services.

The service will run every 10 minutes Monday - Saturday. On Sundays the trains will run every 10 to 20 minutes. It will take eight minutes to travel from one end of the line to the other. The cars seat 30 passengers with up to 26 standing passengers for a total capacity of 56.

Sound Transit (which is planning to build an USD2.4 billion Link light-rail line from downtown Seattle to near Sea-Tac Airport) has decided that Tacoma's smaller system would offer free service, not just today, but permanently to promote light-rail ridership.
