Krakow upgrade contract:
Turkish civil engineering group Güris Insaat ve Mühendislik AS has been awarded an EUR33.6m contract to rebuild the last 3.7-km leg of the 10.8km ‘fast tram’ line from Krakow’s southern outskirts to the city’s center.
The aim of the project is to improve accessibility along the route between the residential area of Kurdwanow and the new Transit Centre development, and to provide transport services to respond to the west to east shift of the commercial centre.
The city centre section starts from Rondo Grzegorzecki, to the east of the central area, and runs north along Al Prowst past the botanic gardens to Rondo Mogilskie, then turns west to Modrzewskiego. A new tunnel will take the it under Glowny station, from where it will turn north past the polytechnic college to rejoin existing tracks at Dworzek Towarowy.
The contract, part funded by loans from the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, was formally signed in Krakow on July 9. Its construction should start early next year to be completed in 2006.
