Karlsruhe extension opens:
The latest extension of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn opens Saturday 14 June from Wörth city hall to the new final stop at Badepark, one of the largest and most attractive leisure time swimming centres of the Südpfalz area. To celebrate the opening there will be a zero tariff for the Saturday and Sunday between Europaplatz and Badepark with services running into the early hours for both days.
The 1.5km extension on line S5 has had a two-year plus construction period and cost some 11m EUR. The largest and lengthiest construction measure was an approximately 80 meter long tunnel with a 120 meter long ramp to the Amadeus kindergarten. On the section are three new important stops: Wörth city hall (as replacement for the past temporary solution), Wörth Badallee/Kindergarten and Wörth Badepark. At the new terminus a storage facility for four trams has been constructed.
Within Wörth the overhead is energised at 750 V direct current. Between the stops Bienwaldhalle and Bürgerpark a changeover takes place to the 15000 V AC of the railway system. It reverts back to 750 V DC at Knielingen as it enters the Karlsruhe city system.
