AUD 56 M for Glenelg tram:
Adelaide's historic Glenelg tramway, which still runs today with the trams delivered when it was built in 1929, is to receive an AUD 56 million upgrade, including 9 new trams. The announcement was made by the South Australia Premier on 24 May. Five of the existing cars will be retained for heritage use. Track will be relaid, stops upgraded and new information systems installed along the 11-km line, which carries 1.5 million passengers/year. The new trams, each replacing a coupled set of existing cars, will seat 80, be fully accessible and be fitted with air conditioning. They are expected to enter service in 2005/6.
