URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

Trams to return to Hanoi? The Vietnam Investment Review has reported that the Hanoi municipal authorities have given the green light to the revival of the city's tram network. The Hanoi Transport and Tram Management Committee recently submitted the plan to re-establish trams at an estimated cost of USD2.8 billion.

Transport authorities are to complete a feasibility study by the end of next year and spend the next two years building the tram lines in order to get them up and running by 2006. Under the plan for a 4 line network, the first routes to be established will be between Hanoi and Ha Dong, and Kim Ma and Nhon, two of the most congested arteries in the urban area.

The Vietnamese government is seeking inward investment for this and several other transport projects. See the Hapi site for details
