Midland Metro - Order submitted:
On 14 March 2003 Centro submitted an Application for to the First Secretary of State under the Transport and Works Act (TWA) 1992 for an order authorising the Birmingham City Centre extension. At the same time Centro also submitted to Birmingham City Council applications for listed building consent to enable the attachment of overhead equipment to listed buildings in the city centre.
The Secretary of State may decide to hold a public inquiry that may be held in the Autumn 2003 after which the inspector will report his findings to the First Secretary of State who will then make the decision to approve or refuse the Application. If successful, Midland Metro construction works are programmed to start in 2005 and open to the public in 2008.
The Birmingham City Centre extension would leave the current Metro alignment after St Paul’s Stop, continue past Snow Hill station along Upper Bull Street, Corporation Street and Stephenson Street, past the Town Hall and onto Broad Street before terminating at Hagley Road, just after the Edgbaston Shopping Centre.
