Good news for Edinburgh:
A GBP375 million investment in public transport improvements for Edinburgh has been announced by Scottish Transport Minister Iain Gray, who has made the money available in principle to Edinburgh City Council to part fund their Integrated Transport Initiative which maps out a way forward for transport in the city. This will fund at least the ‘north Edinburgh loop’ which would link the city centre with Leith, Newhaven and the Waterfront development area. The funding should also pay for the second line - from Haymarket to the airport.
These two lines form part of three intended routes serving the city being proposed by Transport Initiatives Edinburgh Ltd, the arm's length company created by City of Edinburgh Council to deliver up front public transport improvements for the capital.
The GBP375m will come from the Executive’s integrated transport fund. Earlier support for the tram scheme saw GBP6.5m awarded in June last year to develop the North Edinburgh Loop; GBP5m the following month for the West Edinburgh link; and GBP3m in October for the south-east line.
It is hoped to obtain the parliamentary orders in 2005 with operation expected by 2009.
