New tram system approved in Zürich:
On 9 February 2003 voters of the Canton of Zürich approved the Glattalbahn light rail project in a referendum which saw 67% of votes cast in favour of the scheme. This was the last stage of the approval process; legal powers and funding have already been secured. The Glattalbahn is a planned light rail project for Zürich's northern suburbs. One line will run from Oerlikon to Wallsellen, Dübendorf and Stettbach and a second line will branch from this and run to the airport. In a future phase this line could be extended to Bassersdorf. The Glattalbahn will connect to the VBZ tram system at Oerlikon and Stettbach and there will be through running to other Zürich destinations. The Glattalbahn will cost CHF 550 million plus CHF 100 million more for accompanying measures along the route. Construction will start later this year and the first section could be operational by 2006. Observers hope the success of the project will catalyse similar projects in other suburbs.
