Seattle progress:
A day after Sound Transit announced that it would reinstate its original plan to extend the light-rail line to Sea-Tac Airport the Federal Department of Transportation indicated that it would release USD50 million towards Seattle's light-rail plan. This is seen as a sign that federal officials believe the project is back on track after a troubled history where the original proposal to serve the airport was cut back to South 154th Street, about a mile short of the airport's terminals due to budget constraints. The current plan is now to open a
14-mile line from downtown Seattle to just north of the airport by 2009 and extend to the airport by 2011. This change of position comes after an agreement in principle signed
by Sound Transit and the Airport.
