Mulhouse Tram-Train works start:
Divertion of the gas, water and electricity services started in September for the new tram of Mulhouse, Alsace France, with track laying expected to start in the Spring.
The system comes in two sections:
- An urban tram which will serve 5 communes by 2010, Mulhouse, Illzach, Riedisheim, Kingersheim and Wittenheim. This comprises:
- Two lines which cross at Porte Jeune - the first 12km of which is expected to open in 2005
- East/West line - 8,75 km : Illzach, quartier de Modenheim - Porte Jeune - Mulhouse, quartier des Coteaux. 21 stops
- North/South line - 10,97 km : Wittenheim, quartier Bosquets du Roy - Porte Jeune - Mulhouse, gare centrale. 17 stops
- The control of work of this part of the project is ensured by SITRAM (Syndicat Intercommunal des Transports de l'Agglomération Mulhousienne), assisted by SERM (Société d'Equipement de la Région Mulhousienne).
- A suburban tram which will connect the Mulhouse directly to the communes of the Thur valley using SNCF tracks. Control of this section comes under the Région Alsace in cooperation with the French railway SNCF. This is expected to start operation in 2007.
