Dallas extension opens:
A special train on Saturday 29 June brought officials to the opening ceremony marking the extension of DART's Red Line from Park Lane in Dallas to Richardson. the extension uses the former Southern Pacific/Houston & Texas Central right of way. Seven new stations were added on the extension and celebrations were featured at all of them. There were free rides for the rest of the day and on Sunday and the normal service started Monday 1 July.
There are 7 new stations along the route: New Park Lane (replacing a temporary stop); Walnut Hill; Forest Lane; LBJ/Central; Spring Valley; Arapaho Center and Galatyn Park. the 9.3 mile extension was built in two sections in under 4 years is expected to cost some 10% less than the USD205.5 million budget.
