Tyne & Wear extension opens:
The 11 mile (18.5km) extension from Pelaw to Sunderland opened over the Easter weekend only to be shut on the first working day due to industrial action. The extension, which shares railtrack metals with existing rail services, includes 12 new stations and uses four existing but refurbished stations although not all are yet open.
Over 200 Metro trains will serve the city every day, providing a 10 minute service during the day. A journey from Sunderland's city centre to the Monument station in Newcastle will take just 30 minutes.
The extension is due to be officially opened by HM the Queen on 7th May but this is also threatened by industrial action.
