URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

Stockholm light rail closed by bridge faults: Stockholm's Tvärbanan, the Alvik-Gullmarsplan light rail line opened in 2000, had to be closed abruptly from 29 January when the two major cross-water bridges on the line were found to have developed unexpected cracks in their concrete. SL is investigating options for running LRVs over part of the line, eg Gullmarsplan/Gröndal, but all the rolling stock is marooned in Alvik depot. It is not yet clear how serious the bridge problem is, but SL hopes that any necessary strengthening can be achieved in 2-4 months.

It is reported that a limited service has resumed on the reserved section between Gullmarsplan and Liljeholmen using older A30/B30 cars which, unlike the A32 class, are able to be transported through the underground system but which are not allowed to operate on the street sections.

It is confirmed that two-car sets of older trams are operating between Gullmarsplan and Liljeholmen. However it is hoped to resume through service with LRVs from 14 March, but to a reduced timetable due to single-track working across the bridges. Later, in the summer holidays, the bridges will again be closed for some weeks to permit permanent strengthening work to be undertaken.
