Salt Lake City investigates second hand cars:
Rush hour crowding on TRAX's two lines has caused the Utah Transit Authority to investigate obtaining 25 light-rail cars from San Jose. If all 25 cars were acquired and refurbished the total coat could be between USD25 million and USD35.4 million including expanded maintenance and storage facilities. This would compare to some USD90 million if new cars were to be purchased.
UTA's board has authorized a spend of USD1.1 million to start evaluating the 15 years old San Jose cars and to begin redesigning its maintenance facilities and investigate a site for a new depot.
UTA currently has 33 cars with seven more expected by the time the University of Utah Medical Centre line is completed in 2004. It will have an extra 29 cars on loan from Dallas for use during next month's Winter Olympics which will be returned to Texas after the Games.
The San Jose cars will become available as they are high floor and San Jose is converting to low floor meaning that a total of 50 existing vehicles are up for disposal. It is expected that the other 25 would go to Sacramento
