Frankfurt wants 60 new trams from Bombardier; Kassel goes to Alstom:
The municipal transport company of Frankfurt-am-Main has announced it
will replace its remaining high-floor street trams with 60 new cars from
Bombardier in 2003-7, in a contract valued at DEM 224 million. The
double-ended trams, 30 m long and 2.4 m wide, will have a 70% low-floor
section.
Kassel seems set to place the first order for the Alstom Citadis 500,
the dual-voltage 'tram-train' version of the company's low-floor tram
design. Kassel wants eight cars equipped for 750 V dc / 15 kV ac to
inaugurate Regiotram service in 2003. There is an option for 10 more
cars with diesel-electric drive. It is understood that Kassel, Bremen
and Rostock have formed a consortium to acquire dual-voltage cars, and
the Kassel order may be the precursor of further success for Alstom with
this design. Karlsruhe is also looking for a completely new design for
its next dual-voltage car order.
