Philadelphia and New Orleans choose 'PCC' contractor:
SEPTA Philadelphia has awarded a USD 22.6 million contract for the
remanufacture of 18 PCC cars to Brookville Equipment Corporation of
Brookville, PA. The company will work with Pacifica Marine of Seattle
and Mittenwalde Gerätebau of Germany to completely rebuild 18 1947-built
St Louis PCCs for the re-opening of tram route 15 (Girard Ave). The same
company has also been contracted to supply new broad-gauge PCC-type
bogies to New Orleans to be fitted to replica trams under construction
for the new Canal Street Line. The remanufactured PCCs will receive new
GEC motors and electrical control equipment from Kiepe Electric. The
rebuilt cars will be air conditioned and equipped with
centre-door wheelchair lifts.
