Boston's Arborway light rail service to be restored:
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has been ordered by the Department of Environmental Protection of Massachusetts (DEP) to restore light rail service over the 2.4 km of track on Huntington Avenue between Heath Street and Forest Hills that was 'temporarily' suspended in 1985 when PCC service ceased. An original regulation required restoration of light rail service by 31 December 1997, unless it was infeasible on environmental, engineering and economic grounds. The MBTA has always argued that this was the case, despite huge support for light rail service expressed through citizens' groups. The DEP has now ruled that the MBTA cannot prove infeasibility and must therefore provide a schedule by 31 December 2001 showing a timeline for restoration of service beyond Heath Street.
