Blackpool expansion plans:
Consultants working for Blackpool Borough Council and Lancashire County
Council have come up with plans for tramway expansion and new rolling
stock that could form the basis of a GBP230 million bid to Government for
funding. The three-phase scheme would see the existing Starr Gate -
Fleetwood line upgraded and new low-floor trams acquired. Later trams
could take over the rail line from Blackpool South to Lytham, and a new
line built from Blackpool North Station to Fleetwood via Poulton and
Thornton. Second-hand trams are seen as a possibility for replacing that
part of the 1930s fleet that works only during the peak summer months.
The operation of the upgraded and expanded tramway would be put out to
tender and several major groups are likely to be interested as well as
the existing Blackpool Transport company.
