Portland Streetcar inaugurated:
Not content with having one of the most impressive light rail systems in
North America, the city inaugurated its city centre 'streetcar' or
tramway line on 20 July. The 7.6-km loop intersects with the MAX light
rail and is seen as an instrument of regeneration for areas of Portland
just off the city centre that did not gain from the MAX effect, as well
as providing a downtown circulator. Service was opened with five
low-floor trams built by Skoda of the Czech Republic at a cost of USD2
million each. Two more are on order. The USD 56.9 million project has been
funded by parking fees, bonds and improvement taxes.
