Istanbul orders low-floor trams:
Since the Istanbul tram line was opened in 1992 it has been operated by
lightly-modified LRVs from the batch of 105 built by ABB in 1988/9 for
the segregated light rail line. Now the Istanbul Transport Company has
ordered the first purpose-built trams for the tramway, with an EUR 86
million contract signed with Bombardier on 27 June 2001 to deliver 55
low-floor cars based on the Köln/Croydon/Stockholm design in 2002/3. The
new 30-m trams will each carry 272 passengers and feature a floor height
of 350 mm at entrances. In 2003 the modified LRVs will revert to the
light rail line, which is due to be extended to the airport.
