Red Routes for Toronto?:
The Toronto Transit Commission has proposed turning certain of the busiest streets primarily over to public transit. The proposal would see part of King Street between Dufferin Street and Parliament Street, and St. Clair between Yonge and Keele turned into transit malls with separated streetcar-only lanes. Other streets would have designated red routes for bus and tram with parking and left turns prohibited. Traffic signals would also be altered to give priority to public transit.
The Commission considers that if streetcars were able to move more swiftly through the traffic this would bring benefit to everyone. There is as is to be expected some concern from motorists who fear that the proposals would increase congestion rather than relieve it.
A period of public consultation will now take place before any decision to proceed is taken.
