Dublin Tram Unveiled:
The first tram built for the Dublin LUAS system was unveiled on Monday at the UITP convention at Earls Court in London by the Minister for Public Enterprise, Ms O'Rourke. The occasion was marked by a Riverdance type routine. The Alstom CITADIS tram, in a lilac and yellow livery, was built in La Rochelle in France and shipped by ferry for its appearance at the exhibition. It is one of 40 ordered for Dublin of which 26 will be 30 metres long and the rest 40 metres - an extension made possible by inserting a further module to the configuration.
It is expected that the first tram will be delivered to Dublin next October ready to be tested
at the Luas depot now under construction. Delivery will then be at a rate of one a month until the full LUAS light-rail service starts in mid-2003. Work on the project is on schedule, with work under way at several locations throughout the city.
