San Jose (CA) Ground Breaking:
Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and Santa Clara County officials held an official groundbreaking event for phase one of the Vasona Light Rail Project on Wednesday 28th March. When this extension is completed in Autumn 2004, it will link downtown Campbell to both downtown San Jose and the existing 28.4-mile VTA Light Rail system.
Phase one, which includes 5.3 miles of construction to the Winchester Station in Campbell, will cost USD236 million. A second phase of construction will extend the line to Vasona Junction in Los Gatos and will cost an additional USD40 million.
There will be a total of 11 new stops on line which runs partly on existing railway right of way. This project is one of three VTA expects to complete in 2004, when the combined Tasman East and Capitol Lines will also be opened.
