Houston Awards Light Rail Project To Siemens Transportation Systems:
A contract worth about USD120 million from Houston METRO for the design and manufacturing of a turnkey light rail project has been awarded to Siemens Transportation Systems, Inc. of Sacramento, The contract includes 15 light rail vehicles which are to be built in Sacramento.
Siemens is launching its newest member of its vehicle fleet, the S70. The S70 is based on a modular design approach which allows for a "standard" U.S. light rail vehicle design that can be slightly modified for various U.S. transit agencies without major redesign costs incurred.
The Houston METRO project is a 7.5 mile light rail line running from Downtown Houston to Reliant Park (the Astrodome) following the Main Street Corridor.
