LRVs take over Newark City Subway:
New Jersey Transit has announced that its Newark City Subway line will
be operated by new low-floor LRVs from 30 April 2001. The introduction
of these new cars will see the end of PCC service, which at present is
operating Monday-Friday only (weekend service is suspended to permit
upgrading work on the line). There will be a PCC Farewell ceremony on
Saturday 5 May.
These dates should be considered provisional

It is understood that the dates have been revised as follows:
May 11 last day of PCC revenue service
May 14-18 first week of LRV revenue service
note: closed weekends for work
May 19 Saturday ceremonial last PCC day.
Thereafter regular LRV service.

We have been advised that due to technical problems with the new signalling system the changeover may be delayed as the new cars can't run (or won't for safety reasons?) with the current system.

The latest information on the proposed final date for PCC operation in Newark is Friday, August 24, 200l. The following Monday, August 27, LRV's will be running. The "Retirement Ceremony" will be on Saturday, September 1, 2001.
