Pittsburgh order: Pittsburgh Port Authority has finalised th order of 28 light-rail vehicles and the retrofit of a further 55 vehicles. The order worth USD 151 million was sealed with two firms, Adtranz and CAF USA Inc. (Construcciones y Auxiliar De Ferrocarriles). (Note: this order was fist announced last year and reported here on 8 August 2000)

Adtranz will design and produce the propulsion, electrical and controls mechanisms for the new cars, which CAF will assemble in Elmira, N.Y. After the new vehicles enter service, the two companies will begin repairing and modernizing the existing ones. The old cars will get more modern propulsion systems and will be refurbished with new interiors. They will also be repainted to match the new vehicles.

All 83 LRVs are intended to be in service when the Overbrook Line reopens in 2003 which is due as part of the Port Authority's Stage II Light Rail Transit project which includes the reconstruction of 12 miles of the Overbrook, Library and Drake routes through the South Hills as well as improvements to the operations control centre and extra P+R spaces.
