Houston groundbreaking postponed:
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Houston light rail starter line
planned for 25 January had to be postponed at the last minute when a
judge issued a temporary injunction forbidding the start of street
construction while a lawsuit filed by a light rail opponent is
considered. The law suit contends that a referendum should be held
before the light rail project goes ahead, but this is being opposed by
Houston Metro, who argue that insufficient signatures have been obtained
to force a referendum. These developments are the latest in the saga of
attempts by conservative road-orientated Texas forces to prevent
taxpayers money being spent on light rail.
