New light rail shuttle: Europe's newest light rail line opened on 8 January 2001, a unique operation by Dutch railways (NS) to provide a feeder service alongside their (Utrecht-'s-Hertogenbosch) main line from their existing station at Houten to a new platform at Houten-Castellum 1.9 km away. A third track has been laid along this section and electrified at 750 V dc using a mobile substation loaned from Den Haag. One double-ended LRV (an eight-axle Stadtbahn car) has been acquired from the batch built for Hannover in 1974, and now being sold off by the German city as surplus to requirements. The car was repainted in NS yellow livery by HTM in Den Haag, which has taken delivery of a second ex-Hannover LRV to act as spare vehicle if required (Den Haag will probably acquire several more cars from Hannover to help their own rolling stock requirements). The service is a simple shuttle to and fro along the single track. The whole project was set-up in four months.
