Brussels transport plan: The regional transport Minister Jos Chabert has prepared a plan for investment of some 100 billion BEF over the next five years in Brussels' public transport (not including spending on the proposed regional express rail network).

Once the two heavy metro extensions are complete: from Bizet to the Erasmus hospital, and between Clemenceau and Beekkant (in 2003 and 2005 respectively) the only further major metro investment will be for 30 to 50 more 2- or 3-car sets of rolling stock.

Tram extensions in the pipeline are line 55 north from Bordet to NATO HQ (and perhaps onwards to Diegem, in Flanders, where many new light industrial premises and European HQs of multinational corporations are being located) and also south from Silence to Moensberg (convenient for interchange with the eastern belt rail line 26, which links Vilvoorde and Halle via Delta).

Priority will be given to the renewal of the tramways in order to preserve the effectiveness of the network. The refurbishment of a number of Metro and Pre Metro stations is envisaged as well as increases in frequency especially at evenings and weekends
