Seattle light rail project director Paul Bay resigns:
The resignation came after Sound Transit suspended negotiations with Modern Transit Constructors, the firm selected to build the 4.5 mile tunnel under Capitol Hill. The problems arose due to the lowest bid from the chosen contractor came in at USD728 million compared to the estimate by Sound Transit of USD557 million. The tunnel is part of the 24-mile light rail line, which would run from SeaTac to the University District in Seattle. The opening of the system is likely to be delayed by at least a year because of Sound Transit's problems with the tunnel costs. The system was supposed to begin in November 2006 but is likely to be delayed until 2007 or even 2008. The Sound Transit board is due to consider its options on December 14.
