URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

New Denver Order? : On top of the order for 6 extra light rail cars ordered in January at a cost of USD 14.1 million, the Regional Transportation District board (RTD) intend to order a further 12 cars costing USD30 million to meet the high demand on the new southwest line where patronage is above the projected 8 500 daily ridership by some 32%. It is hoped that the first of the cars will be in service by the middle of 2001 to give relief to overcrowding at peak times, but it could be up to 2 years before the order is complete.

With the previous order Siemens Transportation Group will now be building 18 light-rail cars for Denver at its California base. This will increase RTD's fleet from 31 to 49. It is understood that the order is conditional on a tax cutting measure on a forthcoming ballot not being passed.
