URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

New Airport Shuttle: On 16 October Birmingham International Airport announced the selection of the Doppelmayr/Siemens CABLE Liner Shuttle as its preferred technology to revive the transit link between the Airport and Birmingham International Station (600 m) that was provided by the Maglev system from 1984 until 1995. The CABLE Liner shuttle is a rubber-tyred small-profile system running on elevated guideway with automated cable traction. The system has been in commercial service for 18 months in Las Vegas linking hotels and casinos. Work to install the £10 million system on the existing guideway will run from Spring 2001 to Summer 2002, and at the rail station a new station will be incorporated within the multi-modal interchange that is being developed by Railtrack and Centro. Two trains will carry up to 1490 passengers/hour.
