URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

Maracaibo buys Siemens light rail system: The Venezuelan city of Maracaibo (population 1.4 million) has signed a EUR 155 million turnkey contract with Siemens Verkehrstechnik for the construction and equipment of a 6.9-km light rail line linking the city centre with the airport along a centre reservation in Avenida 100. 12 cars will be supplied from Siemens in Krefeld. The line must be in operation by autumn 2002. This is the first stage of what should become a 12.6-km line with 13 stations, and may be the foundation of a 60-km light rail network. The Maracaibo line will be on surface alignment. Siemens is just four months away from completing a similar turnkey project in Valencia, but that will feature subway operation.
