Sydney extension open: The AUD20 million, 3.1-kilometre extension of the Central Station-Pyrmont light rail through Glebe to Lilyfield was opended on Sunday 13 August. At the opening ceremony the NSW Premier, Bob Carr, is reported as saying "The day will come when light rail connections across Sydney are part of the life of our city, as they are in German and Swiss cities." and mentioned the importance and difficulties in extending the line into the CBD. The Minister for Transport, Carl Scully, who also attended the opening reiterated his stance that this extension could not happen until after the opening of the cross city tunnel in 2004. He did however express support for an extension west towards Leichhardt's Norton Street restaurant strip.
